Wine Spectator Magazine Reviews
-
2003 Three Rivers Syrah, Ahler Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley- Spicy, round and generous with its plum, berry and prune aromas and flavors, finishing with hints of pepper and bittersweet chocolate. Best from 2007-2011. 90 points
-
2004 Three Rivers Syrah, Ahler Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley- Supple and graceful, with an interesting tequila note weaving through the red plum and blackberry flavors that hint at hibiscus as the finish lingers effortlessly. The tannins are fine, but this needs time to settle in. Drink now through 2014. 90 points
-
2007 Walla Faces Estate Syrah, Walla Walla Valley- Supple, generous and deftly balanced to play its blackberry and wild blueberry fruit against earthy notes, finishing with drive and finesse. Drink now through 2015. 90 points
-
2008 Walla Faces Estate Syrah, Walla Walla Valley- Broad with a tangy edge and mild grip of tannins around ripe plum and spice flavors, lingering easily on the finish. Best from 2013 through 2016. 89 points
-
2012 Walla Faces Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley- Mouthcoating tannins quickly soften against rich, ripe currant, black cherry and floral flavors that pick up momentum as the finish adds licorice and savory notes, persisting well. Best from 2018 through 2022. 90 points
Great Northwest Wine Magazine Review
-
2013 Walla Faces Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley- Owner/winemaker Rick Johnson relies on Cabernet Sauvignon harvest Oct. 25 from Faces Estate Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley’s Mill Creek district for this balanced red that includes Merlot (10%) and Petit Verdot (10%). The use of 50% new French oak helps make for lovely cola, Bing cherry and blueberry tones with hints of minerality. Its structure leads with bright cherry acidity and picks up tannins that provide some tension to serve it well with beef, lamb and meaty lasagna. Rating- Excellent

2013 Walla Faces Syrah, Walla Walla Valley- From Faces Estate Vineyard (with 4% Zerba Viognier), this Syrah shows a deep ruby color and an intense nose of wild blackberries, mountain blueberries, and black currants, with scents of crushed black roses, sweet tobacco, brambles, lavender and violets. The flavors, as well, are bold, with thick, fleshy, yet focused, black and blue fruits that are underlain with licorice, bittersweet chocolate, Sumatra roast, and minerally loam. The saturation continues on the back with sensations of roasted berries and nuts, leather, toffee, crème de cassis, and burnt charcoal. On the finish, the alcohol registers at a Côte Rotie-like 13.9%, along with ripe fruit acids, and grainy tannins, all adding up to an impressive Syrah. 19/20 points.

2014 Johnson Ridge Estate Syrah, Walla Walla Valley- This 95% Johnson Ridge Syrah (with 5% Dwelley Viognier) offers a deep purplish ruby color and an intense nose of wild blackberries, blueberries, currants, crushed roses, bayberry, lavender, Provençal herbs, violets and incense. The flavors, as well, are engaging, with black and blue fruits that are infused with black licorice, dark cocoa, roasted coffee beans and silty loam minerals. On the back, the wine turns savory and chewy textured, with notes of macerated berries, roasted nuts, crème de cassis, kidskin and charcoal, followed by a smooth, ripe moderate tannin finish. Very impressive at this price point. 19/20 points

2014 Johnson Ridge Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley- Deep ruby colored, this 96% varietal wine (with 4% Wallula Petit Verdot) emits enticing aromas of blackberry, Bing cherry and black plum with scents of black roses, bayberry, tobacco leaf, cedar, anise, olive, sage and incense. The flavors are direct and true to variety, with dark fruits that are intermixed with licorice, dark cocoa, French roast and loam. On the back, the wine thickens, with sensations of macerated berries, roasted walnuts, mocha and graphite, followed by a slightly grainy, spice and herb dusted ripe tannin finish. Again, excellent value. 19/20 points
